Outlook keeps prompting for password again and again

Outlook pops the credentials box every few minutes even though the password is correct and Remember is ticked. Entering it works for a while then the box returns. Driving me mad. What causes this loop?

Three usual suspects in order of likelihood:

Stale saved credentials: Control Panel, Credential Manager, Windows Credentials, delete every entry mentioning Outlook or your mail server, restart Outlook and enter the password once fresh.

Microsoft 365 accounts: modern auth conflict. Set the registry value AlwaysUseMSOAuthForAutoDiscover to 1 under the Outlook AutoDiscover key.

Gmail accounts: normal passwords stopped working long ago. Generate an app password in Google security settings and use that instead.

Credential Manager had 4 stale entries. Cleared them and the prompt is gone. Solved.
