SysTools Yahoo Backup downloads the whole mailbox to your drive. Format depends on how you might read it later: PST for Outlook, MBOX for Thunderbird, EML for plain file-per-message that any viewer opens.
Generate an app password in Yahoo account security first, normal passwords fail for third party access. The tool has incremental backup so monthly top-up runs only pull new mail.
Went with EML on the external drive plus monthly incremental. Exactly what I wanted. Solved.
